Gilda Rose Kalathil reviews the newly released animated movie that visualizes the biblical story of Joshua.

Book of Joshua: Walls of Jericho is an animated movie produced by BMG Global.

Released on June 3rd, 2025, the movie visualizes the biblical story of Joshua.

Joshua was handed the baton to lead the people of Israel to the Promised Land after Moses, who had gotten them out of slavery from Egypt.

Storyline

The movie gives adequate context to the selection of Joshua and why he is considered a rightful leader to succeed Moses. It elaborates on Joshua’s character and gives the audience a feel for the person. His humility, confidence in God, and undying faith shine through the whole movie. Book of Joshua: Walls of Jericho highlights all the important parts of the Bible story, reenacting the 24 chapters of the Book of Joshua, including the consequence of Achan’s disobedience, God’s direction in battle, crossing the River Jordan, Rahab, and the ultimate fall of the walls of Jericho. It further explores life in Jericho after the Israelites take over the Promised Land and Joshua’s last message before death about righteousness and pursuing holiness.

Biblical Representation

Although most of Book of Joshua: Walls of Jericho is biblically correct, it uses artistic license to imagine and elaborate on different aspects. It deviates from the biblical version for longer duration in two specific parts. First, Rahab is shown to bring the messengers of peace back to the Israelite army, staying until recovery and a hope of meeting again in Jericho when she returns. In the Bible, Rahab is introduced as meeting the Israelite spies for the first time in Jericho.

Second, while the kings of neighboring regions were afraid of the Israelites and their God, since word had spread about the Lord, it is not true that the king of Jericho intervened to disarm the priests and people of Israel while they marched around the city. This addition may be considered a possibility but one that is not validated in the Bible.

The Experience

I watched Book of Joshua: Walls of Jericho with my primary school-aged children, and they enjoyed it. I felt, though, that certain depictions and violence were more appropriate for teenagers and above. The dialogue and choice of words are thoughtful, and the narration is absolutely amazing. There were times when my kids asked for explanations and therefore those parts may be quite heavy to understand for the younger kids. The background music and sounds are meticulously put together and accentuates the viewer's experience, while the animation is a bit old-fashioned compared to contemporary animation movies available like Veggie Tales, Superbook, and Prince of Egypt.

Overall, I would recommend the animated movie Book of Joshua: Walls of Jericho, with parental guidance for younger children. Since the duration is 1.5 hours, it could be a good movie for reflection for a Confirmation class, RCIA, or Bible Study groups on trusting God with our battles and His promises.

Book of Joshua: Walls of Jericho can be viewed on Amazon Prime and other major VOD streaming platforms. Do check it out and let us know what you think.
